Zelda Live Action Film Announced by Nintendo
It seams we are entering an era of video game film projects as Hollywood struggles to retain audiences and blockbuster film projects become the only interest to the large studios. We can not deny the billion dollar take by Super Mario Bros. Movie that surely encourages more of this format, but is live action really what the fans of Zelda wanted to see?
Shigeru Miyamoto, the representative director and influential figure in Nintendo's development, has been involved in discussions regarding a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda for over a decade. However, fans are split on the idea of moving away from animation and this could hurt the film should it make the long wrong ahead to the big screen.
In a recent Nintendo Q&A session with investors, Miyamoto disclosed that he, along with co-producer Avi Arad (Arad Productions/former founder/CEO of Marvel Studios) has been meticulously planning the Zelda film for many years. However, Miyamoto acknowledged the considerable challenge of meeting the expectations of the global fan base. He went on to describe it as "an extremely high hurdle" and we believe that is an understatement with fans already chiming in with equal parts optimism and pessimism.
In the context of Nintendo's collaboration with Sony for the live action Zelda film, Miyamoto expressed his own optimism, highlighting the parallels between the attention required for both movies and video games. Drawing comparisons with acclaimed Zelda games such as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Miyamoto underscored the promising prospect of applying the same development philosophy to the big screen.
Miyamoto remarked, "Movies are just like games in that you need to spend a lot of time working on them until you get to something you're satisfied with." He further emphasized the importance of dedicated sponsors providing unwavering support throughout the production process. In this context, Nintendo plays a crucial role as a sponsor for its movies, assembling a committed team to ensure the creation of a final product they can confidently endorse.
The collaboration between Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment for the Zelda film encompasses co-financing and theatrical distribution. Noteworthy director Wes Ball, recognized for The Maze Runner, is set to lead the project, with Derek Connolly, the writer of Jurassic World, reportedly crafting the script. Avi Arad, an experienced producer credited with successful Spider-Man films, is also actively involved in the production.
Although specific details about the Zelda movie's storyline and casting remain undisclosed, the success of Nintendo's film The Super Mario Bros. makes the idea highly anticipated by fans. The Super Mario Bros. Movie received acclaim, surpassing $1 billion at the global box office and earning the title of the highest-grossing video game-based film, as well as the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time.
Despite the current lack of complete production information on the story or casting, fans are showing both support and some criticism to the project. Critics claim the "live action" format is not the way to go but until solid details are released we are really just speculating. Oh, and Machine Gun Kelly has weighed in stating he would like to play the lead, to which we would love to hear your comments about.
