STORYLINE:

The Lobster (2015) is a dystopian black comedy set in a near-future society where single people are taken to a hotel and given 45 days to find a romantic partner. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choice and released into the woods. The story follows David, a man who has just been left by his wife. He checks into the hotel and struggles to navigate its bizarre and oppressive rules. As his time runs out, David escapes to the woods where he meets a group of rebellious loners who live by their own strict code, and he falls in love with a woman, challenging the societal norms he has been forced to accept.

STAFF REVIEW:

The Lobster (2015) is a brilliantly absurd and darkly humorous film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The film's unique premise and deadpan delivery create a thought-provoking exploration of societal pressures and the nature of relationships. Colin Farrell delivers a standout performance as David, portraying a man caught between oppressive societal expectations and the human desire for genuine connection. The supporting cast, including Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman, add depth and nuance to the surreal narrative. Lanthimos' direction, combined with the stark cinematography and haunting score, makes The Lobster a memorable and unsettling cinematic experience that challenges viewers to reflect on the absurdities of love and conformity.
