STORYLINE:

The Beguiled (2017) is set during the American Civil War, in a Southern girls' boarding school that has been sheltered from the outside world. The peace of their isolated existence is shattered when they take in an injured Union soldier. As the soldier recuperates, he begins to charm the women and girls, leading to jealousy and betrayal. The sexual tension and rivalry lead to dangerous consequences as the women fight for survival in their own home. The film explores themes of power, manipulation, and the complexities of human relationships in times of crisis.

STAFF REVIEW:

The Beguiled (2017) is a haunting and atmospheric film directed by Sofia Coppola, who brings a unique, feminist perspective to this Southern Gothic tale. The film is visually stunning, with lush cinematography that captures the eerie, claustrophobic setting of the secluded school. Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning deliver powerful performances, each portraying complex and multi-dimensional characters. Colin Farrell's portrayal of the wounded soldier adds an element of unpredictability and tension. Coppola's adaptation is a slow-burning thriller that keeps the audience engaged with its masterful storytelling and intricate character dynamics. The Beguiled is a compelling exploration of desire, power, and retribution.
