TEXAS’ LARGEST FILM AND TELEVISION PRODUCTION HUB

Central Texas is set to add a touch of glamour with the unveiling of plans by The Hill Country Group for a $267 million television and film studio in San Marcos. The proposed Hill Country Studios aims to boast a dozen soundstages, including a state-of-the-art "virtual production" studio for remote work, claiming to be the largest of its kind in Texas.

Zach Price, Chief Operating Officer of Hill Country Studios, emphasized that San Marcos was a natural choice, citing its strategic location just 30 minutes away from major airports. This proximity is expected to facilitate the easy access of talent and crews to the studio.

The studio complex will be situated at the entrance to La Cima, a sizable subdivision, with the family behind this development playing a significant role as investors in the project. Despite environmental concerns about construction impacting the Edwards Aquifer, a crucial regional water source, the San Marcos City Council has approved a five-year property tax incentive valued at $3.7 million.

Central Texas has a well-established film production scene dating back to at least the 1970s, with notable Austin-filmed movies such as "Blood Simple," "Slacker," "Office Space," "Teeth," "Dazed and Confused," and "Boyhood." Austin already boasts various production studios, including the expansive 20-acre Austin Studios, and there are plans for a substantial studio in Bastrop.

Highlighting recent film activity in the region, crews were in Georgetown filming the HBO Max miniseries "Love and Death," based on a true story, starring Jesse Plemons and Elizabeth Olsen and produced by Nicole Kidman. The studio's construction is expected to commence early next year, marking another exciting chapter in Central Texas' flourishing film production industry.
