What a picturesque evening in downtown Austin tonight! The city lights, especially those illuminating from the Paramount Theater, added even more excitement to the gathering crowds. As the anticipated arrival of the main star, Sydney Sweeney, drew nearer, a group of eerie red-faced nuns congregated near the red carpet.
One blacked-out SUV after another rolled in, prompting the crowd to crane their necks to catch a glimpse of Sydney's face. Little did they know, Sydney was in the last SUV parked towards the south side of the theater. Upon her exit, she swiftly made her way to the exit side of the red carpet, much to the disappointment of the crowd. As she began her red carpet interviews and photo ops, some attendees began to lose hope and slowly departed.
Even some of the persistent autograph collectors turned their backs on the event and disappeared into the night. Having been to my fair share of red carpets, I could discern promising signs indicating the star's eventual return to the streets and the fans who patiently remained.
Just as Sydney reached the end of the red carpet, she deviated from the line to approach the fans. The crowd erupted with excitement as their hopes were reignited and their hearts filled with joy. It had been an emotional rollercoaster for those who stayed put.
Sydney began greeting fans, but once again found herself entangled with the autograph collectors, who not only displayed rudeness but also aggression, even towards small children. Many in the crowd voiced their disapproval, but the staff and the actress's manager left her amidst these individuals, consuming most of her time before she could progress a few feet down the line. Due to time constraints, she was eventually escorted back to the theater for the premiere.
A recurring issue at these events is the lax enforcement by SXSW staff and VIP managers regarding oversized items brought by collectors for signings. This often leads to disappointed fans and tarnishes their experience. There ought to be clear signage informing fans that only postcard- to magazine-sized items are allowed for signatures, and anyone obstructing views or causing a disturbance may be escorted away from the line. Managers should also advise talent to avoid these encounters, as many collectors are solely interested in resale rather than genuine fandom.
In the end, it was just alright. Many of this year's red carpet film premieres have been marred by these antics. I overheard numerous attendees expressing their reluctance to return. It's disheartening, as these events could be wonderful experiences for fans if SXSW and talent managers implemented basic rules to ensure a considerate meet-and-greet for both celebrities and fans alike.
