STORYLINE:

Moonlight (2016) follows the life of Chiron, a young black man growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. The film is told in three acts, each focusing on a different stage of Chiron's life: as a child, a teenager, and an adult. Through his journey, Chiron struggles with his identity and sexuality while dealing with the harsh realities of his environment, including a troubled home life and the pervasive violence of his community. The film poignantly explores themes of self-discovery, love, and the search for acceptance, all set against the backdrop of an often unforgiving world.

STAFF REVIEW:

Moonlight (2016) is a beautifully crafted and emotionally powerful film that offers a profound look at identity and personal growth. Directed by Barry Jenkins and based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue," the film's narrative structure allows for a deep and nuanced exploration of its protagonist's life. The performances are outstanding, with Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes, and Alex Hibbert all delivering moving portrayals of Chiron at different ages. Mahershala Ali's performance as Juan, a father figure to young Chiron, is particularly noteworthy and earned him an Academy Award. The film's cinematography, score, and direction all contribute to its status as a modern classic, making Moonlight a must-see for its heartfelt and authentic depiction of human experience.
