John Allen Amos Jr. was a beloved actor known for his commanding presence on both television and film. Famous for his roles as James Evans Sr. on Good Times and Cleo McDowell in Coming to America, Amos passed away on August 21, 2024, of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles, California. Born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, Amos began his career with dreams of being a professional football player, but it was his talent for acting that would make him a household name. After playing football for several teams in the American Football League, Amos transitioned to acting, a move that would bring him lasting fame.


His breakthrough role came as James Evans Sr., the hardworking patriarch on the hit sitcom Good Times, where his portrayal of a strong, loving father figure made him an icon in American television. Amos also found success in film, starring in *Roots*, where his performance as the adult Kunta Kinte was highly praised. His filmography includes roles in Die Hard 2, The Beastmaster, and Uncut Gems.
