DJI Ronin 4D Video Camera Quick Setup & Discussion

Assembly Guide

Once everything is unboxed and all the contents are out on a table we can get started on assembly. The image below is all the main items you need to complete a basic setup on the Ronin 4D to get started.



Items required to complete this quick setup guide. (Charge the battery first)

Step 01: Charge the battery & Install the battery

Step 02: If your monitor did not come installed install the monitor. If it was already installed check to see that it is installed correctly and tightened the nut properly (hand tight). Open this tab.

This is where the monitor plugs in.

Push plug in and tighten set screw hand tight. No need to crank it down right now.

Run cable through here first.

Through here second.

Tighten this nut on monitor after sliding it into cold shoe on left side of handle.

Step 03: Install both hand grips. Make sure locking lever (black one) is all the way up.

Slide Correct grip (left grip shown here) into place until it clicks.

Push locking lever down.

Slide this button towards the grip after lifting locking lever up to remove grip.

Repeat installation for right grip shown below.

This silver lever adjust the angle of the grips by pushing it forward and moving grip back/forward until it is in the preferred position.

Step 04: Install the LiDar component. First loosen the knob on the top of the LiDar.

Slide the LiDar from the back of the bracket towards the front.

Tighten the LiDar.

Using the cable shown below plug the end that is at a 45 degree angle into the gimbal and hand tighten set screw as shown in the image below.

Plug the 90 degree end of cable into the LiDar and hand tighten set screw.

Step 05: Install a lens using the DL adapter or the adapter of your choice. In our case this is a Sony 55mm 1.8 using the Sony E-Mount adapter.

On the bottom right of the adapter (assuming you are facing it) there is a lock/unlock switch. Slide it towards you (no red showing) to unlock.

Using the levers turn the ring clockwise until it stops.

Lift out the Lens/Lens cap. It pulls straight out, no turning required.

For the Sony E-Mount we suggest you stand the Ronin 4D up as shown in image to help lens seat on adapter level. If you are having issues please watch our youtube video.

Align the index dots on the lens and the mount.

Seat lens making sure to use tiny wiggling motion to feel it seat in place. Once you feel it seat use one hand to hold slight pressure to hold in place as shown below.

Turn the levers counter clockwise and lock the lens in place. If you have resistance do not force it, simply repeat the steps to make sure it is seated correctly. Still having issue? Link

Step 06: Balance Lens by first making sure you gimbal is locked in place where the LiDar is on top. Then unlock the switch shown below while protecting lens from flopping over.

Loosen the silver knob on both sides of lens.

Slide the lens forward or backward to make it sit balanced with out you holding it. It should stay this was even with slight movement, but it will flop over without power on so be careful. Tighten silver knobs on both sides.

Step 07: Balance Gimbal Tilt to 45 degrees by unlocking the switch shown below.

Tilt the Ronin 4D up to about a 40 degree angle in both directions. If lens turns as shown below adjust the axis by loosening the silver knob on opposite side of the locking switch.

Once it is balanced the lens will remain forward even when tilted. Please note, you should hold the ronin using upper handle in front of you when tilting not on a table. Lock all axis for now and move to next step.

Step 08: Install memory card or Ronin PROSSD. In this case we are installing a Lexar Professional 512GB CFexpress Type B memory card. Start by opening the memory card door on the bottom left side of the camera.

Insert the card as shown in image below.

Step 09: Power on Ronin 4D. Push and hold power button for a few seconds to start.

Step 10: Run Auto Tune by entering settings top left side button on monitor.

Press bottom button under "Stabalizer" or use touch screen and touch the label.

Select the sub menu item "Gimbal Calibration"

Select "Auto Tune"

Gimbal will run through stabilization cycle for a few seconds. Then select confirm.

Step 11: To use z-axis (4D) you will first need to unlock it by turning the silver knob shown in the image below counter clockwise until it is fully loosened.

Next, turn on 4D by pushing the 4D button on the left side of the camera as seen in the image below. Be careful that the camera lens area is not under anything as the gimbal arms will rise up at this point.

Your camera should now look like this with z-axis arm raised up.

Step 12: Next we need to balance the z-axis. Once 4D is engaged and the gimbal has risen there will be a new option on the main screen as shown in image below:

The following window will pop up. If the z-axis needs adjusting it will indicated this by telling you which way to turn the adjustment knob until it is balanced correctly.

Step 13: Format Memory Card. Enter settings menu and touch "Storage"

The following screen will appear. Press "Format CFexpress Card"

The following screen will appear. Press and hold the on screen button until it begins formatting process.

Step 14: Don't forget that damn lens cap and go shoot something!

COUNTER WEIGHT INSTALLATION

Place/tilt gimbal into this position. You may need to remove any lens you have mounted if it is long but having a small lens can be helpful in helping keep the gimbal to stay in this position since it does not lock like this. Use the included screw to tighten in all four holes.

SONY E-MOUNT ADAPTER

Mounting the Sony e-mount is best achieved when Ronin 4D is sitting at this angle. It is very tight and has zero room for error when mounted for the first 5-10 times. Do not force to the point that you feel it will break, rather keep trying to find a place where it will lock in with effort but not extreme effort.
